The Private Investigators Association of Utah, Inc. is a nonprofit mutual benefit corporation (501(c)(6)).
The purposes of the Association are to:
- Unite the private investigation professionals for the purpose of effectively exerting their combined influence upon matters affecting the private investigation profession.
- Increase the credibility, image and value the Association brings to the community and its Members which ultimately provides value to the Member’s clients as a result of the public’s perception, recognition, respect.
- Among other things, a few examples of how the purposes of the Association are to be achieved include:
- Raise the standards of the Private Investigation profession
- Provide continuing education for the profession
- Improve the public’s image of the profession
- Lobby for the needs of the profession
- Provide a collective voice for the profession
- Provide a network for the profession
PIAU offers the following classes of membership:
- Active. Individual private investigators licensed by the state of Utah are eligible to apply for active membership. Active members have the right to vote and hold office.
- Associate. Individual private investigators who, in his or her own jurisdiction, is qualified under the respective laws or regulations to operate as a private investigator, is not licensed by the state of Utah, and resides outside of Utah,is eligible to apply for associate membership. Associate members have the right to vote in person but not by proxy or representation and do not have the right to hold office.
- Affiliate. Individuals who do not qualify for active or associate membership, but are an employee of a licensed private investigator, or is an employee of a state, federal or proprietary agency exempted from licensing, are eligible to apply for affiliate membership. Affiliate members do not have the right to vote or hold office
- Service and Industry. Individuals who provide services and/or materials relating to the investigative industry are eligible to apply for service and industry membership. Service and industry members do not have the right to vote or hold office.
- Honorary. An honorary membership may be granted by the Board of Directors. It is limited to name only and carries no privileges of membership and may be revoked at any time by the Board of Directors.
- Emeritus. Emeritus Membership may be granted by the Board of Directors and carries all privileges of Membership. Emeritus Membership may be revoked at any time by the Board of Directors
Membership Obligations. Association Members agree to be bound by the associations Bylaws, Code of Ethics and the actions of the Board of Directors or voting members of the Association.
Dues and Assessments. The Board of Directors sets the amounts of annual dues for membership notices the membership annually at least sixty (60) days before the beginning of the Association’s fiscal year. Membership dues are due and payable on application for membership and annually thereafter. The Board of Directors may levy additional assessments necessary to carry out the activities of the Association.
Termination. Membership terminates when: a member resigns, or; annual dues are not paid on time, or; a member is expelled by the Board of Directors. The Association may disclose to the public the standing of any of its members as either member, pending, suspended, or nonmember.
Approval. Membership maybe approved or denied by the Board of Directors and is not transferable. Membership plaques, certificates, and identification cards and devices are the property of the Association and must be returned to the Association upon termination of membership or on demand.
By submitting an application for initial membership or renewal of an existing membership, the individual agrees to furnish the Association with all information relative to any claim or action filed against the applicant or applicant’s agency. The applicant authorizes representatives of the Association to make a thorough investigation of their application and background. The applicant further understands that, unless otherwise indicated, certain information on the application may be available for publication on the PIAU Website under Members. The applicant agrees and understands that submitting false information on the application will result in revocation of membership.
